Malignant melanoma of skin
Overview
Malignant melanoma of skin is a common cancer characterized by abnormal cell growth in the skin. This form of cancer is the most deadly type of skin cancer because it can spread quickly to the rest of the body. Individuals with this disorder usually develop tumors in the skin which spreads to other organ systems in the body, if not treated extremely quickly. Depending on the location of the tumor and where the cancer spreads, symptoms can vary greatly. Common symptoms include scarred skin, fragile skin, muscle weakness, and even breathing problems if spread to the lungs. Doctors are usually able to diagnose this defect relatively early in the abnormal growth process, as the resulting symptoms are quickly apparent. Treatment is developed on a case-by-case basis and depends on the specific needs of the patient. Though it is difficult to prevent this kind of cancer, exercising frequently and avoiding direct exposure to the sun will cause skin tissues to be less prone to developing problems. If an individual's cancer has progressed, doctors may suggest chemotherapy or surgery to combat cancer symptoms.
